Rhode Island Opioid Conference: Discussing the Intersection of Opioid Use Disorder and Hepatitis C Transmission in Young Adults

According to the 2016 Epidemiological Profile from Rhode Island, there is an ongoing syndemic of HCV, opioid dependence, and overdose. RI ranks sixth-highest in the nation for drug overdose death rates and highest in New England. HCV can be an infectious consequence of substance use when substances are injected—this conference seeks to address the HCV and Overdose epidemics concurrently.

In an effort to address this underappreciated problem, the American Liver Foundation New England Division is organizing this conference to come together to discuss the continual increase of new cases of hepatitis C due to the opioid crisis. Throughout New England, the increase in reported cases of hepatitis C closely mirrors the increase in opioid usage.

We seek to bring together experts in substance abuse services and hepatitis C management. The aim is to that by bringing together the professionals involved in the care of these patients we can stimulate collaboration that will lead to improved care for those in need.
